Bugs are food, not friends
Tuesday, January 24, 2012 I had this whole long intro written for this video, but I decided to scrap it. One simply cannot introduce a video of himself sampling a bug platter with any degree of eloquence or justification. This was filmed when MrLady and I attended a China-North America business summit in Harbin, China this past September. Well, this, was filmed at a beer garden while off the clock. They serve normal food at the summit.

If it makes you feel any better, I dry heaved twice just watching this.
Good times, good times.
I may never eat again....
BACON? Oh my word...pass the VODKA...
Great Video..at least the first bit that I could watch before I started dry heaving....
Cheers
I've no words.
My kids are going to freaking LOVE THIS.
And I'm sending it in for my kid's Grade 10 computer class's Youtube Video of the Week. Because some things are just meant to be shared.
Okay, there is NO way you would ever get me to eat one of those grasshoppers... (or most of the other things either) but really the grasshoppers. After dissecting them in high school and seeing what's inside.... and the crunch! That was the only one I could hear over the street noise... I think I just about lost MY lunch. Oh man, you are BRAVE!
Why, man? JUST WHY???!! You are a brave, twisted individual. I knew it wasn't just your Ninja prowess that set you apart. You and Andrew Zimern should totally hang out.
My kids think you rock. Then again, they have an affinity for fart jokes, so I'm not sure that's a compliment.
Note to self: When Jim asks if you want to see a video of him doing something "REALLY gross", he means REEEAAALLLY gross!!
Oh. My. Goodness. That was amazing. Amazing and disgusting at the same time. You are a brave, brave man, or a little crazy. I laughed, and I am proud to say that I didn't dry heave once. I loved hearing Mr. Lady howling in the background, exactly what I would have done if I was there too. Now when I eat bacon - I will think of Water Beetles......thanks for that!!
Why did I watch this after lunch?! And the only thing that kept me watching was hearing mrlady gag along beside me....Poor Sylvia the "I have to take these people around" Colleague. Seriously, I think you grossed even Timon out.
I want to watch, I really do. However, it is almost dinner time and I have a very sensitive gag reflex.
That's what she said.
I already wanted to go to China, but now I want to go even more because Kyle has vowed that he will match you, grasshopper.
Shannon cracking up in the background was AWESOME. The boys and I watched this together - you are still their hero.
I read the comments and - you guessed it - decided against watching the video. Wise or Wussy?
I lost it at, "Are You My Mother?"
Okey - I'll watch it. It can't be nearly as scary as watching my fifteen year old grow up.
Well, it's all about how adventurous you are, isn't it? Good for you for trying those new experiences. I think anything is palatable if it is deep-fried; chili powder is just a bonus.
None of this made me gag or dry heave. The baby birds were sort of an ...ewww...moment because, you know, they're babies! An Australian Aboroginal delicacy is witchetty grubs, eaten live. Doubt MrLady could cope with that AT ALL.
HAHA. VICTORY!! I did not dry heave, but I came close to bursting out in hysterical laughter. The best part was, "Are you my mother? NOM NOM NOM"!!!!!
You Sir, are crazy but at the same time, you did a FANTASTIC job on making some of those bugs look good. When you said that the water beetle tastes like bacon, you had me at hello. I want some now! If I'm ever around - we shall go get some fried water beetles!
Thanks!
Wow, I'm so impressed! I strongly believe in trying everything once (okay, twice), and with my Chinese heritage, I relish a lot of things that other Americans find gross. But I'll be honest, I might have a hard time mentally with some of those bugs. Good for you! Oh, and I laughed so hard at "Are you my mother?"
I tried to watch it. I really honestly gave it the ol college try. But the first close up of whatever was in bucket/bowl #1 (I didn't really see it because I actually covered my eyes) totally freaked me out. So yeah. I am going to believe you did in fact eat all those yucky creepy crawlies and know that we are still friends. But after I send this off, I will be blocking the memory of you and a table full of crunchy edibles forever. FOREVER.
Fear Factor would be a piece of cake for you now. Besides, everything tastes great washed down with beer, right? ;-)
You have serious, mental problems. This is why we get along so well.
I had to come over and watch the video after seeing Zakary's video! SO funny! I can't decide which I like better! But you have a new reader!
I loved this more than what would be considered normal. The only way it would have been better is if you had waved to me while eating that ci-CAY-duh.
OMG, You're totally ready for Fear Factor now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm dying. DYING.
this is hysterical. Good grief, I miss y'all
I love that you rate each bug against each other. And of course the "Tasts like bacon" remix is outstanding. What I'd like to see next time -because there is, thankfully, always a next time- is video of people reacting to @Mrlady as she screams at you and is laughing so hard she's wetting herself. Cuz that would be worth seeing. Thanks for always making me laugh, Jim!
Barfing. And bookmarking to show my son, who lives for eating disgusting things. I have a feeling you are his new hero.
SO nasty, but SO funny! Way to be a man, Jim!
Where is the un-see button? I WANT TO PRESS THE UN-SEE BUTTON.
::collapses into uncontrollable heebie jeebies::
What??? No Recipes?
OMG! I don't know why I waited so long to watch this. @MrLady cracking up is the best! and water beetles taste like bacon?!?! Who knew? Apparently, the Chinese.
I'm TOTALLY grossed out about now. Ahem. Not just because you're eating deep fried bugs...but because the ONE and ONLY other time I've ever heard about Harbin, China was that they do this amazing Ice Sculpture event...http://www.joeyfortman.com/journal/2011/12/19/christmas-on-the-potomac-at-gaylord-national.html
Now, the bugs? Ahem. It's alll you dude. =)
I threw up in my mouth a little bit.
You are a brave man. While I would not do it, I am impressed!
HAAA this was officially my entertainment for the afternoon.
You've done a great service. Now, when the end of the world comes, I know...go for the water beetles and grasshoppers...leave the cicadas for the chumps.
Were they all out of rootbeer milkshakes to wash those down with? :)
